❓ About
Post By Pigeon adds carrier pigeon logistics to Build 42.
Trap a live pigeon, build a loft, and put the bird on a perch. Carry it to a second loft on foot and that opens a route. From then on the pigeon flies that route by itself, carrying a small parcel between your bases.
Delivery time is based on the distance between the two lofts, and a pigeon will only fly a route you have already walked with it.
A pigeon cannot die in this mod. It can be set free, and it can leave a loft you stopped feeding. Either way, the routes it knew go with it.
💡 Features
- Live pigeons: caught in cage, crate and box traps, weighted towards towns and farms.
- Buildable lofts: a Woodwork 3 build with four independent perches.
- Trained routes: carry a bird from one loft to another to open a one-way route. Routes belong to the pigeon, not the building.
- Parcels: a small four-slot container a bird can carry. Items, stacks and notes arrive intact.
- Distance-based flight: the ETA comes from the real distance between the two lofts. Flights survive relogs, restarts and unloaded destinations.
- Loft inbox: arrivals wait at the destination loft until somebody collects them.
- Grain and water hoppers: shared by every bird in the loft, so more pigeons cost more upkeep.
- Field commands: a pigeon riding in a shoebox can be set free, sent home, or sent to a route it knows.
- Map stamps: lofts you have visited are marked on your own map only.
- Multiplayer: built and tested in co-op. Flights, routes and hoppers are handled by the server.
🏁 Getting Started
The short version: catch a bird, build two lofts, walk the bird between them once.
- Set a cage, crate or box trap baited with bread, corn or cereal. Pigeons are caught between 06:00 and 20:00, and are most common in town, trailer park and farm zones.
- Bring an empty shoebox before you check the trap. Without one the pigeon stays in the trap, and checking again later still works.
- Build a Pigeon Loft (Farming category, Woodwork 3) at the base you want to send from.
- Open the loft and drop the pigeon onto a free perch. That loft becomes the bird's home.
- Fill the grain and water hoppers, or the bird will eventually leave.
- Build a second loft elsewhere, press Train Route, and carry the boxed bird to it. Placing it in the second loft opens the route.
- Load a Pigeon Parcel into the perch slot, press Send, and pick a destination.
📖 Crafting Recipes
Everything here is hand-craftable. The loft is the only thing that needs a skill.
🗺 Routes & Delivery
A pigeon only flies a route it has walked with you first. Routes are one-directional: training A to B lets A send to B, and nothing more.
- Training a route. Open the loft, pick a perch and press Train Route. The bird goes into an empty shoebox in your inventory. Carry it to the other loft and place it in a perch there to open the route. A half-finished link survives a relog.
- Sending. Load a Pigeon Parcel into the bird's perch slot, press Send, and choose from the routes that bird knows. The tooltip shows an estimated time in the air.
- Flight time. Based on the actual distance between the two lofts. Corner to corner on the Build 42 map is roughly eight and a half in-game hours.
- Arrival. The parcel lands in the destination loft's inbox and waits there. Right-click a parcel slot to take an arrival. The bird then flies its return leg home on its own.
- Routes belong to the bird. They travel with the pigeon, not the building. Set a pigeon free and every route it knew goes with it.
- Re-homing. Installing a bird into a different loft makes that loft its new home. It keeps every route it already knows.
🌾 Bird Care
Grain and water hoppers are shared by the whole loft, so four birds drain them four times as fast as one. Only birds that are home eat. A pigeon in flight or riding in your bag feeds itself.
- Grain. Anything the game treats as animal seed feed: barley, corn, wheat, rye, flax, poppy, pumpkin, green peas and sunflower seeds, in seed, sheaf or dried form, plus cereal. Grass and nuts are refused.
- Water. Poured in from any container holding water.
- How long a full hopper lasts. One bird: about 6 days of grain and 4 days of water. A full loft of four: about 1.5 days of grain and 1 day of water.
- Neglect. Once either hopper hits empty a countdown starts. After three game days empty, one bird leaves. The longest-neglected goes first, one per lapse, not the whole loft at once.
- Hand-feeding. A single bird can be fed or watered directly, which buys it about a third of the loft's grace on its own.
🎒 Field Commands
Right-click a shoebox holding a live pigeon. All three options consume the bird from your inventory, and none of them can be undone.

📰 Common Info
- A pigeon never dies. It can be set free, or leave a loft that ran out of food or water, and its routes go with it.
- The parcel slot is not a real container, so loot generation cannot fill your loft with junk.
- Lofts you have visited are stamped on your own map only, and the stamps can be toggled off.
- In multiplayer the server resolves flights and routes. A parcel arriving at an unloaded base is held in the air and delivered when that square streams back in.
- Flights survive a mod reload and a full game restart.
- Lofts have their own idle, landing and delivery sounds, heard by anyone standing nearby.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Commonly asked questions will be answered here.
Trap one. Cage, crate and box traps only, because the bird has to arrive alive. Bait with bread, bread slices, corn or cereal, and check between 06:00 and 20:00. Town, trailer park and farm zones are far more productive than deep forest.
You need an empty shoebox in your inventory to take a live pigeon out of a trap. Without one the bird stays in the trap and you can come back for it. Shoeboxes are common loot, and there is a paper and twine recipe for one.
A pigeon can only fly a route it has been walked along at least once. Press Train Route at the sending loft, carry the boxed bird to the destination loft, and place it in a perch there. Until then the send list will say the bird knows no routes.
Routes are one-directional. Training A to B lets A send to B. For the return leg, train a bird at B along the same walk in the other direction.
It depends on the distance between the two lofts. The send tooltip gives you an estimate before you commit. As a yardstick, opposite corners of the Build 42 map is about eight and a half in-game hours in the air.
A hopper ran dry. Three game days after grain or water hits empty, one bird abandons the loft for good, starting with the one that has gone without longest. It happens one bird per lapse, so coming home late costs you a pigeon rather than the whole network. The Loft tab warns you before it happens.
Yes, it was built and tested in co-op. The server resolves flights, routes and hopper levels, and map stamps are per-player so you only see the lofts you have been to.
Yes. The mod places nothing in the world by itself, so adding it mid-save is safe. Lofts are player-built and pigeons are trapped.
